Blueberry Descriptions:

Early Blue – Very Early (late June and early July) medium to large very sweet berries. Upright growth 4 to 6 ft with brilliant mixed red colors in the fall.  First to ripen and early to bloom, this upright bush produces stout canes with bright red wood, while displaying large glossy green leaves in the summer. USDA zones 5 to 8.

Duke – Early season (late June and July), medium to large sweet and crisply firm berries with excellent flavor.  Upright growth 4 to 6 ft with orange and yellow fall color.  Duke is the most widely planted early ripening northern variety. It is a heavy, consistent producer with an attractive, light blue high quality berry. Duke blooms late but ripens early, which protects the blossoms from early spring frosts. USDA zones 4 to 8.

Sierra – Early mid-season (July), very large, sweet tasty berries. Upright open growth 4 to 6 ft with red and orange fall colors.  The vigorous, fast growing bush is adaptable to many soil types and makes an excellent selection for hedgerows. Sierra's distinctively flat, quarter-sized berries are borne on loose clusters over the outer periphery of the bush. USDA zones 5 to 8.

Olympia – Mid-season (late July and early August), medium, spicy and aromatic sweet berries.  Easy to grow, large upright spreading bush 4 to 6 ft with emerald green leaves and bright red fall color. Many of our fresh fruit customers rate Olympia as their favorite tasting and they are excellent for freezing. The medium sized dark blue fruit is perfect for muffins and pancakes. USDA zones 5 to 8.

Blueray – Mid-season (late July and early August), very large and sweet berries. Open spreading growth 4 to 6 ft with bright red and yellow fall color.  An old favorite and versatile variety, Blueray performs particularly well in areas with hot summers or very cold winters, and produces high quality berries with outstanding dessert flavor. The stunning rosy pink flowers turn bright white when in full bloom. USDA zones 4 to 8.

Draper - Mid-season (late July and early August), large, crisp, delicious powder-blue blueberries that grow in loose clusters. Large upright stocky and vigorous growth 5 to 6 ft. Draper is highly productive with outstanding fresh market quality berries with excellent shelf life.  USDA zones 5 to 8.

Toro – Mid-season (late July and early August), large sweet berries. Upright stocky growth 4 to 5 ft with crimson red and yellow fall color. Toro has easy to pick berries that hang like grapes from the stocky bush making it a favorite of many u-pickers.  Toro has outstanding ornamental qualities making a very handsome bush for landscaping. The flowers turn from hot pink to bright white and contrast nicely with the bronze colored spring foliage. Deep green summer foliage turns to the brightest of reds in the fall. USDA zones 4 to 8.

Bluecrop – Mid-season (late July and early August), large sweet berries. Open upright growth 4 to 6 ft with bright red fall color. Considered a good variety for adaptability, consistent yields, high quality fruit and disease resistance. Bluecrop is perhaps the most widely planted commercial variety in the U.S.  USDA zone 4 to 8.

Chandler - Mid-late (August), very, very large and sweet berries (world’s largest Blueberry). Upright vigorous bushes grow 5-7 feet tall with bright red fall color.  Besides very large fruit, it also has a long ripening season and high yields.  USDA zone 4 to 8.

Brigitta – Mid-late to late season (late July to early September – a long picking season), large to medium sweet and very flavorful berries (another favorite of our u-pick costumers and our family).  Upright open growth 4 to 6 ft with beautiful orange, red and burgundy fall color. An easy to grow, vigorous hybrid yields one of the highest quality berries available. Brigitta berries possess an amazing shelf life, maintaining high quality in the refrigerator for over a month.  The bush is a fast grower with deep green foliage and bronze tinted new growth. USDA zones 4 to 8.

Liberty - Late season (August), large, very flavorful and firm berries.  This is a new variety that has a heavy production having an upright growth habit spreading open when full of berries. Cold hardy and can grow to 7' tall with bright red/orange fall color. USDA zones 4 to 8.

Darrow – Late season (August), large robust, sweet tart berries rated as excellent flavor in taste tests. Upright growth 4 to 5 ft with orange and red fall color.  Darrow boasts one of the largest berries of all cultivars, yielding fruit that will cover a quarter. The berries are slightly flat and light blue with a memorable robust flavor, making them well worth every gardener’s effort. USDA zones 5 to 8.

Elliot – Very late season (mid- August and September), medium large, zesty and flavorful berries. Upright growth 4 to 6 ft with deep red, wine fall color.  With this variety, you can enjoy fresh berries clear through September. Bright burgundy colored wood accents the grey-green foliage and sky blue berries. It has a late bloom period that avoids most spring frosts and the typically heavy bud set results in very high yields of fruit that have good storage life. The berry can be slightly tart until fully ripe. USDA zones 4 to 8.

Aurora – Very late season (mid- August and September), large intense flavored berries. Spreading growth 4 to 6 ft with red and burgundy fall color.  Aurora is the latest ripening highbush variety with a high yield capacity and high quality fruit that has an excellent storage life.  Slightly sweeter than Elliot and starts about a week later. USDA zones 4 to 8.

Morning Shade Farm is located in a peaceful and pictorial setting on the edge of 50 acres of woods back off the main road, and is about 25 miles south of Portland Oregon. We have a few picnic tables which are great for a picnic lunch or snack. We use many earth friendly farming practices including erosion control, fertility monitoring, water management, and integrated pest management practices to minimize our use of chemicals. Our U-pick vegetables are all organically grown and we use only organic chemicals or ones derived from natural substances directly on our fruit. We do use some inorganic fertilizers and limited weed control on the ground around our berry bushes and fruit trees.

Please remember to bring a check or cash (preferred) because we are not able to accept credit/debit cards. We have buckets here for you to use or please bring your own containers.  We also have flat boxes that we sell at price: $1.75 per flat box with hallocks. Sorry, DOGS are not allowed in the fields due to Dept of Agriculture sanitation rules. Our picked blueberry operation has been GAP Certified (good agriculture practices) for safe food handling. On the farm we maintain portable toilets and soap/water hand wash units.

See directions to the farm and nursery below.  Please note that S. Barnards Rd is currently closed for repair a half mile east of our farm and nursery so if you are coming from the east you will need to detour around this closure.
